FCIR Wins Three State Journalism Prizes

The Florida Center for Investigative Reporting won two prizes in this year’s Florida Society of News Editors journalism competition and a third in the Sunshine State Awards.

Tristram Korten’s and Trevor Aaronson’s reporting on the Citizens Awareness Foundation, which found that the nonprofit had filed 140 public records lawsuits in 27 counties in an effort to collect cash settlements from every lawsuit filed, won third place in FSNE’s investigative reporting category.

Ashley Lopez’s print and radio series “Florida’s Shrinking Workforce,” which documented how the state government shed thousands of public jobs over the previous decade, won third place in FSNE’s multimedia category.

Korten’s and Aaronson’s reporting on the Citizens Awareness Foundation also took second place for the First Amendment Foundation Freedom of Information Award, part of the Sunshine State Awards, which is organized by the South Florida chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
