The Florida Center for Investigative Reporting won eight awards in the Florida Society of News Editors’ annual statewide journalism competition, including FCIR’s first awards for Spanish-language journalism.

First-place prizes went to Ralph De La Cruz for blog/online commentary, Colby Katz for enterprise online slideshow and Jacob Kushner for Spanish news reporting.

The English-language version of Kushner’s story, which was a partnership with WLRN Miami Herald News examining deportations to Haiti, also took second place in investigative reporting.

Tristram’s Korten story about extraditions — also the result of a WLRN Miami Herald News partnership — won second place in feature and arts writing and second place in Spanish features writing.

Mc Nelly Torres won second place in beat reporting for her education coverage. Grant Smith, Trevor Aaronson and Ralph De La Cruz won second place in multimedia for FCIR’s project on foreclosures.
