The Florida Center for Investigative Reporting won two first-place prizes in the 22nd Annual Sunshine State Awards, a statewide journalism competition organized by the Society of Professional Journalists’ Florida Pro Chapter.

Tristram Korten’s report “In Florida, Officials Ban ‘Climate Change,’ ” a collaboration with Miami’s WLRN, won first place in investigative reporting for radio. “Dogged pursuit of the veracity of a concerning claim about government led this reporter to an important story,” the judge wrote. “Multiple sources, although all reiterating the main point, contributed nuance to the story. Well-told, timely, and no doubt with a lasting impact.”

FCIR’s infographic “Visualized: Police Militarization in Florida” — which was researched by Trevor Aaronson and designed by Karsten Ivey and Belinda Ivey — won first place for online infographic. “The amount of detail and research included, clearly presented in such a way that it needs no other context or set up to understand, make this infographic stand out as a winner,” the judge wrote.
