Florida Center for Investigative Reporting Associate Director Mc Nelly Torres discussed the state of nonprofit journalism as part of a panel discussion at the Fifth Annual Reva and David Logan Investigative Reporting Symposium, an invitation-only conference that brings together the nation’s top journalists.

Joining Torres on the April 10 panel, held at the University of California, Berkeley, Graduate School of Journalism, were Robert Rosenthal of the Center for Investigative Reporting, Raney Aronson-Rath of PBS Frontline, Calvin Sims of the Ford Foundation, Richard Tofel of ProPublica, and Gary Bostwick, an attorney specializing in media law.

Among other topics, Torres described FCIR’s efforts to raise money from Florida foundations rather than from national groups that have traditionally funded investigative reporting projects.

“I’d rather spend my time in Florida and raise money there than waste my time and energy elsewhere where I’m competing with ProPublicas and others,” she said.
