FCIR Wins Two Honors in Green Eyeshade Awards

The Florida Center for Investigative Reporting took home two prizes in this year’s Green Eyeshade Awards — a contest open to journalists in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Ashley Lopez’s radio series “Florida’s Shrinking Workforce,” a collaboration between FCIR and WGCU in Fort Myers, won second place for Public Service in Radio Journalism. The staff of North Carolina Public Radio WUNC took first place in the category, and Bobbie O’Brien of WUSF Public Radio in Tampa won third place. Lopez’s radio series has also won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award.

Tristram Korten and Trevor Aaronson placed third in Online Investigative Reporting for their coverage of how the nonprofit Citizens Awareness Foundation and a related law firm profited from public records lawsuits against government agencies and contractors. The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting and the Palm Beach Post placed first and second, respectively, in the category.
