Dear Readers,

Now in our fifth year of operation, we believe that the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting has established an important and permanent place in Florida’s news media.

We work with the state’s largest media — print, television, radio and online — to bring you important investigative and enterprise stories that otherwise aren’t being told. You can find our journalism not only at FCIR.org, but also in newspapers and on radio and television stations across the state.

Our journalism has reached millions of people, in Florida and beyond. We take on stories that have otherwise been overlooked. Among our most significant stories:

  • Profits and Public Records — how a nonprofit and a law firm profited from Florida’s open records laws
  • More Guns, More Gun Murders — a data-driven analysis of how murders by firearms have increased dramatically in Florida since 2000
  • K12: Education, Profits and Controversy — a series that showed how K12 Inc., the largest provider of online education, was using improperly certified teachers in Florida and had attempted to cover up the practice
  • 13th Grade — a print and radio series that documented how more and more high school graduates in Florida require remedial education at the college level
  • Deportations to Haiti — a print and radio investigation that revealed how the Obama administration was not following its own protocols in deporting Haitians to the island nation after the devastating earthquake
  • Extraditions Under Review — a print and radio enterprise story that had extraordinary access to show how the state wasn’t pursuing alleged criminals who’d fled the country while out on bond

We could not do this work without the generous support of readers like you. Please show your support by making a tax-deductible gift this holiday season.

You only have a few more days to have your donation count for a 2014 tax deduction. In addition, we are now in a campaign to raise $25,000 to qualify for a matching grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. Your donation of $50, $75 or $100, or more, will qualify for a dollar-for-dollar match from EEJF.

Thank you for supporting FCIR.

Happy Holidays,

Trevor Aaronson
